Bokrijk arboretum and open-air museum: Group work and school excursion

Group work in which the students themselves plan and prepare a study trip for the students of the lower years. For this assignment, the woodworking students in grades 6 and 7 work out a day trip for woodworking grades 3, 4 and 5.

The only condition is that a visit and guide in the arboretum is included in the day. The students independently search for:

  • transportation and expenses;
  • possible activities;
  • assignments for the students.

After the preparations and research in class, they visit the teacher themselves. They check their daily schedule, estimate whether their daily schedule is realistic, view the possible activities and visit the arboretum so that they can prepare their guided tour. For this preparation, they made a sheet to write down during the discovery (appendix: Preparation for guiding students on a trip to Bokrijk). Based on this excursion, the students then prepare their guide assignment with the tree sheet and make a final daily schedule with activities.

When all students go on a trip, they receive an assignment sheet (appendix: Bokrijk arboretum task) about the guided visit to the arboretum. This sheet was also made based on the input of the students themselves. For absent students there is a version that can be made digitally. The students guide small groups of students in groups of two or three. There is always a teacher for each group of students. The students who were guides were already given an opportunity to practice speaking skills in class. They are assessed on this during the guided tour in the arboretum. Feedback and feedback happens afterwards during the lesson.

In the afternoon the students visit the open-air museum in Bokrijk. A photo search was made for this. The students go out independently (individually or in groups). They receive a plan from the open-air museum. A digital alternative was also shared for the absent students for this photo search.

You will also find an improvement key for all assignments in the appendices.
